Preparing Your Home for an Italian Greyhound Puppy

Puppy-Proofing Your Home

Before bringing your Italian Greyhound puppy home, carefully assess your living space for potential hazards. Puppies explore their environment by chewing, climbing, and squeezing into small areas. Removing risks early helps prevent injuries and emergencies during those critical first months.

Household Hazards to Remove

Common household items can pose serious dangers to puppies. Secure or remove electrical cords, window blind cords, and poisonous plants. Keep garage items locked away—antifreeze, pesticides, and other chemicals can be fatal if ingested, even in small amounts.

Toxic Foods to Avoid

Many everyday foods contain toxins that can make your puppy dangerously ill. Never allow access to items such as chocolate, onions, grapes, raisins, alcohol, garlic, caffeine, xylitol (sugar-free gum or candy), mushrooms, fruit pits, macadamia nuts, bones, rawhide, or salty foods. When in doubt, keep human food out of reach.

Emergency Poison Resources

Accidents can happen quickly. If you suspect your puppy has ingested something toxic, contact a professional immediately. Keep these numbers easily accessible:

  • ASPCA Poison Control: 888-426-4235

  • Pet Poison Helpline: 800-213-6680 or 855-289-0358

Prompt action can save your puppy’s life.
